August, 2008 The Los Angeles Times reports that seven Gigante supermarkets in California have taken the El Super name. This almost doubles El Super's California stores. July 14, 2008 Recently, SupermarketNews.com reported that grocery stores in Ontario owned by Metro are dimming interior lights by as much as 50% during a summer effort to reduce demand on Ontario’s power grid. The effort, talking place at A&P, Dominion, Ultra Food & Drug, the Barn, Loeb and Food Basics stores owned by the Montreal-based retailer, are part of the “Leave It Greener” campaign, which also promotes reusable shopping bags, prints sales fliers on recycled paper, offer plastic bag recycling at stores and diverts cardboard and plastics from landfills, Metro said. July 11, 2008 In a recent StoreFrontBacktalk.com article, Bill Homa, who just stepped down in July 2008 as the CIO for the Hannaford supermarket chain, discussed his views on data security, PCI, Linux, and Microsoft. July 8, 2008 Loblaw announced a 120,000 sq ft store in Ontario that is to be LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Building Rating System) certified, as well as serve as a prototype for future Loblaw stores across the country.
